Beauty Products I Bought That Weren’t Actually Worth the Money

Charlotte Tilbury Lipsticks – Pretty much all of them, to be honest… A few years ago, yes, they were great. But there is so much choice on the market now, and there are way better products out there to spend your money on. Some of her makeup is still up there with the best, but the lipsticks, they just don’t interest me at all anymore… plus, I think the packaging is now erring on the side of tacky in some instances. The original, gold, sleek tubes – amazing, but tubes with diamantés on? No thank you. I also find there’s a major issue with the shades on the website, whenever I’ve bought something online according to the pictures, the shade actually looks nothing like that depicted on the website. Not the best.

Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush – Don’t get me wrong here, I adore Rare Beauty, adore it. But the liquid blush everyone on the internet is losing their mind over, well, it’s just nice… but is it incredible, and life changing? No. Not at all. In fact, I think there are so many other wonderful liquid blush products on the market now, that offer much more exciting shades and formulas. I do think the liquid blush is a decent product – I just don’t think it’s worth losing your mind over, in my opinion.

Jones Road Beauty – I was so excited for this brand, a new offering by Bobbi Brown, it was obviously going to be a winner, wasn’t it… but actually, for me, it wasn’t. I tried some of the skincare products, a few brushes, an eye pencil, and even the number one wow product of the line – some shimmery tinted balm thing… the whole lot fell flat for me, and I still can’t to this day understand why everyone writes such rave reviews about the products. Maybe it just doesn’t work for my lifestyle, skin type, and general uses.

Lush Bath Bombs – Again, a few years ago, yes, amazing. But now – when there’s so much else on offer – for the ridiculous price they now are… seriously not worth it (again, in my opinion). We’re now talking between £7 – £10 for a bubble bar or bath bomb, when they used to be between £3 – £4. I do understand prices have risen, and are challenging for businesses at the moment, but almost £10 for two, maybe three at a push, uses – my money would be better placed elsewhere.

L’Artisan Parfumer Fragrances – Another brand I was incredibly excited to discover, I spent a good amount of money trying out quite a few of these fragrances, for them to just fade away into nothing. I do like a skin scent, but not when I’m paying £150 for a bottle… I want something with a bit more substance. This is a real shame, because I find their fragrances very unique and special – they do (or at least did) a tomato vine scent, and it was incredible – a scent I really crave – but it lasted all of five minutes, before disappearing into a generic powdery floral. A big disappointment.

Sol de Janerio 68 – My goodness I really, really, do not understand the hype around this one. To the point where I’ve wondered if there’s actually something wrong with my nose. I find it hideous, extremely artificial, and reminds me of something I’d wear when I was 10 years old. Everyone else seems to really love this one though, so maybe this one is just me?

Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s Baccarat Rouge 540 – Am I missing something here? I find this fragrance unbearable, and cannot for the life of me understand what everyone else sees in it. I feel like my nose is broken! I am gourmand scent obsessed, but this – I can’t bear it anywhere near me. It does make me wonder if there’s something wrong with me here – as I very much understand that I’m in the minority here, with disliking it. I also find it smells extremely similar to Sol de Janerio 68, so maybe there’s a pattern here. But dislike aside, even so, literally everyone wears this now, it’s so expensive, and I don’t understand why everyone wants to smell exactly the same?! I think when this first became big, it did so, as it was (I don’t see it… but) so unique. That certainly isn’t the case now.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – This was marketed to me on instagram as the second coming of Christ, the answer to all my dry skin worries, transforming, amazing, incredible. I honestly don’t even find it that hydrating, in fact, it’s one of the worst products I’ve used in terms of hydration. It is a lovely cream, a gorgeous consistency, and does feel very high quality – but its job is hydration? And it doesn’t do that… again, to the point where it’s got me questioning myself, because everyone else just seems to love it that much.
